Mike Robinson, chair of Stop Climate Chaos Scotland, said:
“The oil and gas sector has been declining for most of the last 20 years, whilst the net zero agenda brings huge opportunities for Scotland and the North East.
“This political posturing is short sighted and detrimental in every regard. Planning to extract every last drop of oil and gas from the North Sea is irresponsible and impractical in the extreme.
“It would do nothing to tackle energy security or reduce energy prices, and instead condemn offshore workers to an unmanaged transition as declining supplies run down even more, and help lock in catastrophic levels of climate change.
“We need to put our energies into transitioning to fuel sources we can control and maintain indefinitely, instead of flogging an already dying horse.
“The future is with renewables, generating secure home-grown power, creating lasting green jobs and lowering energy bills.
“Climate change is already devastating lives and livelihoods and costing our economy billions of pounds. For a safe future, we can’t drill like there’s no tomorrow.”
